"Blue Dwarf” Japanese Larch In Container (4K) - June 22, 2024
Purchased 2 years ago. It has acclimatized and sending out new branching. I fertilized in Spring with slow release granular for tree/evergreen. Has been kept in a pot since purchase. Grown quite a bit just in the 2.5 months since the first needles showed

Life cycle begin in late August when foliage appears. I routinely trim the messy foliage early Spring allowing for a tidy back drop for the blooms. It normally bloom for 7 weeks or so before I dead head. Last step is to remove the yellow foliage after allowing energy to go back to its bulbs. Wow!! Amazingly beautiful little conifer!! I’m shocked to see how much growth it shows in few months’ time in the same season! This must not be an immature plant. I always want to grow these beautiful conifers but I live in zone 8b, with very limited choices where I live, it’s just too hot. Still searching for some that will survive the heat here!! Happy gardening !! Tks for sharing!! 😃

    This is the first year I planted 2 plants. Do they only bloom once a season? One plant bloomed and the other is just green foliage.

    • @GardenNotes
      @GardenNotes День тому

      Yes, they bloom once a year only. As for the one not blooming- any chance it is not the same variety hence slightly different bloom time. I used to have a white variety and it bloomed later than the purple although you should be seeing buds now. Is it in the same sun exposure? I find the white one not as robust. The purple one multiplied over the years (I started with just one plant) but the white variety disappeared. Th is are the only possible reasons I can think of. Let us know how things go if you have time! 🙏🏻

    Loving the hint of red slipping into her foliage! She has really taken to her in ground home. Seeing this makes me want to put mine in ground too…Tell me, what you think of a spot on the north east side? It’s cold there in winter though. I’m so hesitant to try it🤔 Thank you for sharing her again!❤

    • @GardenNotes
      @GardenNotes 2 дні тому

      Mine has East & South exposure so it is getting sun from sunrise to about mid afternoon. It is a bit more sun than I think it likes. Planted it there for 2 reasons: to get more blooms and a more intense Fall color. I am keeping my fingers crossed for an easier Summer so it gets established more. In your case, I think the sun exposure means no stress during Summer. “Ruby Slippers” is hardy to zone 5. If it is making it through winter in a container, it should make it in ground despite a colder corner I suppose.😊😊

    I have a single foxglove in a pot that I bought from Home Depot earlier this year. City life with no garden; it's just at my doorstep. So here are my questions: Now that the blooms are done, do I just cut back the stalks and let the leaves remain in the pot? Do I strip the seed pods off the cut stalks and put them in the basement in a brown paper bag for future planting? Do I leave the pot outside over the Chicago winter or bring it inside? Thanks for any advice you can offer!

    • @GardenNotes
      @GardenNotes 5 днів тому

      Honored to have your question! Although I have never grown them in container, that's what I would do. When I do that for mine in ground, some died but a few has re-bloom the year after. Since I have plenty of self seeded babies, I normally just pull them out after bloom. In your case, you can have the seeds for future. I would suggest to start some seed now or later in the year, Unless you have the newer varieties, Foxglove is a biennial, meaning its blooms in its second year. The earlier you plant them, earlier you will see blooms. Not too familiar with USA but I Googles your area, it should be HSDA zone 5 or 6. Foxglove is hardy to zone 4 to 10 in ground. During winter, place it as close to your door as possible, or as warm a place you can find outdoors. It is borderline for winter survival in a container. Hope things work out for you! Hope I am explaining things well enough 💪🏻💪🏻👍🏻👍🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻

      Don't despair if this does not work. Some plants work better in containers than others. I grew up in a city where we kept plants in pots on hangers outside windows. Yet, I have fond memories of my childhood days with my potted plants.
